Dave, as always, good thoughts delivered with good humour. You know I'm not a religous guy but when I do get a chance to read your missives, I find them to usually be quite enjoyable and inspirational. I think the lesson of ground hog day can be applied whether your religious or not! Thanks and hope your doing well! Rob Levy

As a Christian waiter, I can identify with the complaints although 1) I think bad tipping corresponds more to "conservative" people than "religious" which in turn corresponds closely with the personality traits that actually influence tipping behaviour, and 2) although I am embarrassed anytime someone advertises Christ then behaves badly, the reality that this happens is not properly viewed not as an aberration from the Christian view of the world, but perfectly in line with Jesus' judgement of the heathen AND the religious (couldn't the capitals flourish). For a group of people whose highest commandment is "Judge not", it is a good idea to capitalize on this opportunity to tell them that God doesn't just judge liberal perverts, he hates (and saves) conservative tightwads too.

Dave, you say that "we become like Him by the same radical strategy. Faith that he has changed us into a new creation".
I think this is where we get off track as Christians. Yes, salvation is by the gift of God's grace, through faith. That is the first crucifixion. We are baptized into his death and arise new creatures.
The second crucifixion is where we aggressively pursue transformation.
I believe that at the point of salvation we are endowed with a supernatural capacity for transformation but that we must "work" at it. We must study His life and follow the model of obedience and submission He had to the Father. Further, we should employ the "spiritual disciplines" to aid us in transforming ourselves.
Grace and faith are sufficient for salvation, but effort on our part is needed for sanctfication. 1 cor. 9: 24-27

Dave,

So, so true. Wow, The Cure is the best book that I have read in a while (excluding the Bible.) My wife and daughter are reading it. It is life changing. Thank you for sharing.

"My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. (I John 2)

Jesus became our advocate and our path to salvation when He arrived on earth. The miracle in the manger was not Jesus ignoring stupid cows. The miracle was God becoming flesh."

Thank you, Dave. We all need to be reminded constantly that God allowed Jesus to be like us, weak and vulnerable human flesh, even though he was the Son of God. He who had everything, and WAS everything, voluntarily became a nothing to lift up to heavenly places in Christ Jesus the nothings that we humans are in our own selves.
Now that's a miracle! The miracle he came to bring us -- we are "filled with himself, the author and giver of everything everywhere." (Eph 1 TLB)

Perhaps, too, we should make more of an effort to reach out others during this time of year. Loneliness and isolation becomes even more intense than usual at this time of year. If you know someone who will be alone that day, call them, take them out for a meal, go to a movie, bring a meal to their house, or invite them to your family gathering. It's very difficult being alone on Christmas.
